The FFMPEG command I used ffmpeg -i full.mkv -map 0 -c copy -bsf:v h264_metadata=video_full_range_flag=0 limited. The color_range=pc to color_range=tv being the relevant change My FFProbe data on the original file for the video steam is as follows (edited for brevity) Ĭodec_long_name=H.264 / AVC / MPEG-4 AVC / MPEG-4 part 10 I ran the video file through FFMPEG and changed the metadata without reencoding anything (just remuxed the streams and rewrote the metadata) and now it plays in Plex without issue On my playback on Plex the intro screen is a washed out grey, the same as yours If you have pretty decent NVME SSD like u might find yourself missing free space on your home partition when after starting plex media player with qt 5.11. This file is an AHDTV source which is unlikely to be the "Full" color range, but if you look at the color range that's being reported/tagged in the H264 metadata it is tagged as full (see MediaInfo screenshot) It seems everyone who was speaking to the limited/full color range issue was correct I found the file in question you posted so I could do some investigation myself (see the album below, MediaInfo matches exactly) I turned on DLNA and tried playing through that, which it does appear to play in true 4K as the colours are vibrant, however, it buffers every 1.5 seconds making it unplayable. VLC and Windows Media Player shows a perfect image, while Plex shows an increased brightness on every single device.ĮDIT 3: Explanation and fix by /u/tehpsyc provided here: 1080p media plays fine, however, when attempting to watch 4K movies, Plex is transcoding it, causing the image to have an orange/dark tinge to it. On my Windows 10 laptop, I only tested in Chrome via .Īll devices and clients played the file with direct play, which was both verified in Plex and using Tautulli. On my Windows 11 PC, I tested using the Plex Media Player program, I tested in Chrome via, I tested using VLC, and I tested using Windows Media Player. I tested each TV using the Plex Smart TV app, as well as via the Apple TV 4K. I have not been able to find anything really similar between them.ĮDIT 2: I guess I need to specify exactly what I have and what I've tried: ![]() Opening the file in VLC is MUCH better than playing it through Plex.ĮDIT: I should note: It's not EVERYTHING this happens to. Why is Plex changing the colors so much? I have verified two TVs (both are LG OLED running Apple TV) and 3 players on 2 clients. Every client is direct playing the content. "Enable HDR tone mapping" is NOT turned on. I added some captions to the images on Imgur. When I use any Plex client, it's more of a dark grey. Simple to set up, straightforward to customize and organize and seamless to stream to other devices, it shows just how good some platforms could be if they put their mind to it. By Richard Devine published 8 June 17 If youre using Plex on your Windows PC and a connected TV, you need to use the Plex Media Player app. ![]() I've noticed that depending on the application I use, Plex uses very different colors. Plex is an awesome media center app that is made even better by being free and easy to use.
